What is sports rehab in Urbandale?

Sports rehab starts where general physical therapy does: a cause-first evaluation that tests movement, strength, and the joints above and below the one that’s been benched, not just the spot that hurts. The difference is the finish line. A weekend athlete rebuilding a hamstring and a varsity pitcher rebuilding a shoulder need different standards before either one is cleared, and sports rehab is built around your sport’s actual demands, not a generic timeline.

Care still runs through the same four named phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, and Prevent, in that order. Sports rehab leans hardest on the back half: Perform, where load and speed build against numbers you have to hit, and Prevent, where you’re tested against your sport’s specific movements before anyone calls you cleared. Every visit is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy who works with athletes, not a rotating trainer.

Clearance here means passing tests, not reaching a date on a calendar: hop tests, strength ratios side to side, movement screens under fatigue, whatever your sport actually asks of the joint that got hurt. If the numbers say not yet, it’s not yet.

Phase I
Pain

Calm it down.

Hands-on treatment begins at the first visit. You leave understanding what’s actually going on, and you feel a difference early.

Phase II
Prime

Restore what’s stuck.

Targeted mobility work for the joints and tissue actually holding you back, dosed to your body, not a printed sheet.

Phase III
Perform

Build strength you trust.

Progressive load against standards you have to clear before moving on. Confidence, here, is a training effect.

Phase IV
Prevent

Make it stay fixed.

Testing before you’re cleared, then a keep-it-gone program sized to your real week. Then we graduate you.

Endpoint: defined at evaluation reviewed with you, every phase
02 What it treats 02 / 09

What conditions does sports rehab treat?

Sports rehab commonly picks up where an injury happened during activity, training, or competition, though you don’t need to be a competitive athlete to benefit from it. A sample of what it commonly addresses:

Return to play without passing the actual tests tends to end the same way: the same joint, re-injured, usually further from the season than before. A body cleared by the calendar instead of the numbers is a body still carrying the original problem onto the field.

03 The session 03 / 09

What does a sports rehab session look like?

Early sessions look close to standard physical therapy: hands-on manual work, targeted mobility, and loading dosed to where the tissue actually is in healing. Your evaluation sets the standards you’re working toward, and every visit checks progress against them.

Later sessions look more like practice than a clinic visit: agility drills, cutting and landing mechanics, sport-specific strength work, and testing under the kind of fatigue a real game produces. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy runs the session and calls the standards; nothing gets waved through because the calendar says it’s time.

04 Who it’s for 04 / 09

Who this is for, and who it isn’t.

Sports rehab tends to fit athletes at any level, weekend league to varsity to former college player, working back from an injury that happened during activity, or an old injury that never got the return-to-play testing it needed the first time. You don’t need a referral to start, and you don’t need to already know the diagnosis.

The people who choose sports rehab over a generic release-you-in-six-weeks approach are usually the same type: they’d rather pass a test than trust a guess, and they’re not interested in getting hurt the same way twice. If that’s you, you’re the right athlete for this room.

It’s not the right first stop for an acute injury that needs imaging or a physician’s exam first (a suspected fracture, a joint that won’t bear weight at all, significant swelling within the hour) or for return-to-play clearance after a concussion, which follows its own separate protocol. In those cases, see your physician first, then come see us for the rehabilitation and testing that follows.

Good fit

  • An injury that happened during activity, training, or competition
  • An old injury that never got proper return-to-play testing
  • No referral required; no need to already know the diagnosis
  • Athletes at any level: weekend to varsity to former college

Not the right first stop

07 Questions 07 / 09

Questions, answered plainly.

Both start with the same cause-first evaluation and one-on-one care with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Sports rehab adds return-to-sport standards built around your specific sport’s demands, cutting, throwing, sprinting, landing, and leans harder on the Perform and Prevent phases, where you’re tested under load and fatigue before anyone calls you cleared.

No. Sports rehab tends to fit anyone hurt during activity, weekend pickup games, a recreational league, a training block, or a return from an old injury that never got proper return-to-play testing. What matters is that the injury happened during movement, not your level of competition.

Clearance is based on tests, not a calendar: strength ratios comparing the injured side to the healthy one, hop and landing tests, and movement screens under the kind of fatigue your sport actually produces. If a standard isn’t met, we keep working instead of clearing you and hoping.

Wear clothes and shoes you can move and cut in, bring your insurance card if you have one, and be ready to describe your sport and season, since the standards you’re tested against are built around what that sport actually demands. Imaging helps if you have it, but you don’t need it to start.

Start with the evaluation that sets your standards.

Put it in writing.

Five short questions. A real person calls you back, usually within two business hours, with times that fit your week.

The people who end up filling this out are rarely in the worst pain of their life. They’re just done working around it, done picking the errand that doesn’t require the stairs. If that’s the stage you’re at, this is the part where you stop researching and start.
